PASTORAL COUNCIL BUSINESS MEETING MINUTESMarch 11, 2012 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.Members Present: Kate Arnold, Ed Baum, Valerie Bica, John Bisaha, Wayne Bunting, Kim Corridori, Mary Fran Cullen, Lewis Gangloff, Flo Gargula, Fr. Bill Graney, Patrick McCabe, Mary Ann McLane, Jim Murray, Donna Ramage, HankWisniewski (for Jim Nolan) Members Excused Absent: Jim Nolan, Mike Polen, Angie Grimes, Sarah Sweigart and Chip Schussler Open Reading and Reflections: Wayne Bunting reading – Matthew 26.26 / Reflection – Wayne’s faith story; “The best meal” Meeting called to order by Father Bill Graney at 7:00 p.m. Addition to the agenda – Reschedule April and May PC meeting due to Easter and Mother’s Day. Decision made to move meetings to April 15 and May 20. Father Graney introduced John Bisaha appointed steward to fill open position. Welcome John! Kim Corridori took roll call, 15 attending. February minutes were approved as written. Parish Buzz: Sunday March 4 – 10:30 mass count 352. We seem to be attracting young families. Both Father Graney and Father Corrigan acknowledge in a nice way families with young children. Deacon John Falkowski is celebrating 25years as a deacon. His anniversary was celebrated today at the 10:30 Mass and with cake after Mass. His family had a lunch in his honor at their home. A visiting 5:30 Sunday guest commented on the spirit of Resurrection. Hank noted we welcome, that’s who we are. A newcomer originally from Maine has joined a lector team after a donut conversation. Valerie Bica said a few families with young children did not participate in the pictorial directory. They choose not to publish their children’s pictures for safety concerns. Long Range Questionnaire – by Fr. Bill Graney 30 interviews are planned from a broad segment of our current community including those who have recently left. Other existing small groups (faith groups, PC etc.) are also participating. Fr. Bill asked that PC members answer the 8 questions (or those you want to), which were given out and return to him. Your answers would help the overall process. Father Graney noted from a past interview that newcomers though welcomed are not sure how to get involved. Suggestion made to use a white erase board / chalk board within view of donut table – with a “Did you know?” happening. Break for Refreshments: Thank you Father Greg Unfinished Business
The Conversation Starters – Handout is to give us a sense of what might make up the diocese plan. We are encouraged to attend March 25 discussion from Noon to 2. An email to the parish with a more concise version of the handout; the parish will be invited to participate in this planning meeting. The deanery level discussion will be April 14th at St. John the Beloved. Committee Reports Youth: Thank you for support of young neighbor is action’s souper supper. Social Concerns: by Mary Fran Cullen
Our participation will be HOLY WEEK, Monday April 1 – Sunday April 8 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 575 Polly Drummond Rd, Newark 19711. Housing is supplied for the week at Ebenezer and we will provide evening meals Monday April 1 and Tuesday April 2 for approximately 14 plus the helpers. As mentioned in Sandy’s newsletter side dishes and desserts are still needed. Other needs are family size hygiene items, snacks, and bath towels. Items can be labeled FAMILY PROMISE and dropped off at Resurrection. Also, skilled van drivers available at 6am or 6pm are needed to transport families to/from St James Episcopal Church. Finance Council: by Fr. Bill Graney Income is better than this time last year. We are still striving to replenish savings. John Werner, Mike Pohlen and Ed Baum attended an interfaith meeting on Energy. Parish campaign is to be held on April 14-15. Information on this will be in the Easter Bulletin insert and will be the nine-month report. Pastor’s Comments and Advice Fr. Bill Graney suggested the need to reconsider how to thank people for giving and to consider a thank you letter. Following discussion we agreed. Suggestion was made to include a “What we do and Why” in a newcomer welcome packet and use of an “Ask Me” nametag. A suggestion was made to keep 6 copies of minutes each month to pass on to incoming stewards and trustees. Adjournment was at 9:00 p.m. Father Bill led us in a closing prayer. Next PC Meeting, April 15 at 7 p.m. Reflection – Jim Murray / Refreshments – Wayne Bunting / Donut Ministry – Kate Arnold February 12, 20127:00 to 9:00 p.m. Members Present: Kate Arnold, Ed Baum, Wayne Bunting, Kim Corridori, Deacon John Falkowski, Lew Gangloff, Flo Gargula, Fr. Bill Graney, Angie Grimes, Kay Lennon, Patrick McCabe, Mary Ann McLane, Jim Murray, Donna Ramage, Chip Schussler, Sarah Sweigart, Cory Zolandz (for Valerie Bica) Members Excused Absent: Jim Nolan, Mike Polen Members Absent: Joe Shank Also attending Dick Schwer Open Reading and Reflections: Angie Grimes reading – Straining for Sabbath amidst the Demands of Phones and Computers. Reflection Questions: What did you do this week? What can you do next week? Participation in pairs by council members was lively. Meeting called to order by Chip Schussler at 7:00 p.m. There was no addition to agenda. Kim Corridori took roll call, 18 attending. Motion to approve January minutes was moved and seconded as amended.
Dick Schwer asked that attendance include present, excused absent and absent. He asked that a replacement be found for Joe Shank. Our by-laws suggest using an agreeable alternate and if none found an election would be held. Elementary Religious Ed (k through 6): Cory Zolandz full report attached Parish Buzz: 20 parishioners took advantage of laptops in our library to tell Congress to support Respect for Rights Conscience Act (HR 1179 & S 1467) reported Mary Ann McLane. Visitor shared her discomfort at daily mass with Kim Corridori. She felt on display. She was encouraged to come again now that she knows some of our Resurrection family. Kim also shared her daughter’s community search led her and her daughter to a conversation on Civil Unions in the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware. Loving acceptance was the bridge to finding a faith community. Mom is very happy. Break for Refreshments: Sarah and Angie Sweigart Unfinished Business
Jim shared his findings about a free AED – Automated External Defibrillator placement through DE State Health and Social Services. The program includes training. Motion was approved to proceed forward with the application. Suggestion was made to also offer a CPR course.
Father noted the 1992 strategic plan found communication an issue. Parishioners need input as well as information. A fill in type of survey will be used to gather information and make an attempt to reach out to active and inactive alike. PC approved survey. The next planning meeting is February 13th. Committee Reports: Youth by Sarah Sweigart Continuing to regularly meet. YNIA met this evening. YNIA winter arts festival went well. Working on preparations for Souper Supper. Sarah said YNIA are more active in National advocacy issues than in the past. New Business: Advice on placement of new Resurrection sign (Photo on cover of older picture directory). An inexpensive better-lit location perhaps closer to the curb is being considered. A suggestion to run electric line from pole not building was made by Ed Baum. In front of church building is not feasible due to dwarf tree, benches, etc. More findings will be presented next month. Pastor’s Comments and Advice Small faith groups are starting up. About 66 parishioners participate. Additional Comments Dick Schwer wanted to know the amount of dialog going on between the committees and the Finance Council who in turn involves the P.C. in decisions. The advice given to committees at this time is no new spending. All are frugal and only if need do they go to F.C. Fr Graney and Chip Schussler informed parish council that a quarterly report could be expected in April. The finance committee’s primary focus has been measuring how well we are doing in terms of income more than covering the expenses. Adjournment: by Chip Schussler at 9:00 p.m. Father Bill led us in a closing prayer. Next PC Meeting, March 11 at 7 p.m. Reflection – Wayne Bunting Refreshments – OPEN Donut Ministry – OPEN Elementary Religious Ed (CFP) Report Kindergarten through 6th grade January 12, 2012 Cory Zolandz Who are we? We are in Kindergarten thru 6th grade. Our Kinders and 1st grade as well as our 4th and 5th grade have combined this year due to low enrollment. We have 60 students, 7 catechists, many assistants, two of them teens, hall monitors, and substitutes. About 77% live with 2 parents, while the rest with 1. About 52% have 2 baptized Catholic parents, 31% have baptized Christian parents, and 14% with only 1 professed Catholic parent. We draw from mostly 19808, but also from 19711, 19707, 19804, 19703, 19350 in that order. Out of 60 children, 21 schools are represented. 5 families cannot afford the fees due to financial instability in their homes. 6 families already enrolled in CFP have children that would be ready for Kindergarten next year. 4 families are parishioners at other parishes (St. John’s, Holy Family, St. Mary’s, and St. Thomas) I cannot judge from our database on how many parishioners have children in Catholic school, but anecdotally, we do not draw a large crowd from Catholic schools-probably because of the tuition discounts offered. However, it is good to note that Elaine Little petitioned Holy Angels when her girls moved there, for the parishioner rate, and was granted that. This year we have 6 children preparing for First Communion and two catechists. Parents stay for formation as well, and then there is a portion of time for family catechesis and prayer. Our catechists are a diverse group of people, most highly certified, some teachers during the day as well. half of them are parents to children in our program, but half of them do not have children and are still very committed to this Christian witness. As a CFC and staff we are very committed to offering whole-community catechesis, like the instruction on the Roman Missal, the Epiphany Party, and the upcoming End of the Year Picnic in May. We try to coordinate with the Adult Faith Formation Committee as well as the Social Concerns Committee in their efforts for catechesis and evangelization. In the past, the CFP has made large donations of personal hygiene products for the Women’s Prison. Currently, we are looking for a way to include our younger children/families in the birthday visits to Woodlea Senior Residence. Also, we are combining our efforts to teach the children about the Works of Mercy, that the larger parish will be focusing on for this upcoming Lenten Season. What do we need? At this time it seems to make sense to continue our classroom model at St. Mark’s. If we are able to keep our participation at the same as it is now, we truly need the space for appropriate classroom activities, as well as storage. We are only charged for the classrooms that we use, so at this time, it is a good use of our money. We also spend a good portion of our budget of texts. In order to stay accredited with the diocese, we need to use textbooks that are aligned with the diocese requirements of curriculum. We have been slowing updating to the newest copyright, so as to not overwhelm the budget. Generally speaking, it is apparent that many of our CFP families do not engage in larger church activities, most alarmingly, Mass. This is not a peculiar problem, as it is true for many parishes throughout our nation. Mass attendance is down overall. There are statistics that offer some insight into this issue and to the larger question of, “WHY?” To many of us, we would think, “WHY? Would you pay for and commit to bringing your children to CFP and NOT take them to Mass?” Confounding! To unpack this, we can look to the #1 reason cited for not attending Mass, “We’re too busy.” This is a vague response that boils down to a lack of ability to prioritize. Professionals in this aspect of church, agree that the modern, middle-class parent is bombarded with commitments, desires, and needs. Most households have two full-time working parents, and their time out of work is devoted to the betterment of their children in all aspects. They want to give their children “everything.” They have no idea how to go about that. We as church, specifically as a diocese, have prioritized a few things for them by insisting that children spend a year in religious education before beginning sacramental preparation. Parents who have baptized their children generally want them to then receive First Communion, and so they will sign them up for 1st and 2nd grade. Same thing happens at Confirmation. However, many parents are delaying these sacraments now, waiting until they believe their child is ready. Lastly, we live in a new culture, just about every day. Our modern world is one of fast-paced, always moving, and deeply personal. Decisions are not made for the betterment of the group, but rather for myself and my child. This is not an all-bad thing, however, it does not breed church-going. What can we do? Adopt an attitude of prayer, word, and deed that reflects the church’s love for children and their families. Keep our children in mind when making decisions for your programs or when you attend mass. Remember them always in prayer. They need your prayerful support. Many of our children have already dealt with intense loss and burden in their short lives. Some of them have chronic illness, some suffer from extreme learning disabilities, many of them have horrific food allergies and learning disabilities that make sitting in a classroom on an “extra” day of the week, a real accomplishment. And like all families with young ones, there are worries and anxieties. So please keep them in prayer. In word… speak kindly to them at Mass. Don’t put pressure on them. Pretend you don’t notice when they leave early, they may just be going to the bathroom. Tell their parents that their children are beautiful. This can change the rest of their day. Sing the praises of those families who are here or for those who worship with us occasionally. Tell other people, outside of Resurrection, how lovingly we care for our little ones. In deed… invite these parents to come to functions/small-faith sharing/souper supper. Visit us at CFP if you have a special knowledge of a topic, perhaps a prayer style. Go with a young person to CLOW, and notice the hard work and preparation that the homilist, musician, and host family have done. Smile. Be kind. Simple things make us an inviting parish. Our adult faith formation needs to be innovative and relevant. Most busy households cannot get out of the house on a weeknight. There needs to be other opportunity for faith sharing, bible study, etc. We have had the best “luck” with opportunities that require no large commitment. 10 weeks of Tuesday nights, just doesn’t work for young families. Online conversations may be one avenue for formation. I have also had luck with weekly email updates with Family Faith Tip of the Week and Lenten Challenge. It offers parents ideas about creating rituals, prayers, and community right in there own home. Another area that could use your attention is our CFC. If you have insight into education/catechesis/evangelization, consider talking with me further about joining our CFC. It is an under-utilized committee and we have an awful time even trying to get our members to meet. We could use some revitalization. I would appreciate your support in trying to get that committee better organized and more participatory. Studies prove that the first things people want to know when they come to a Church, is: What can I get? If they get that need met, often then will stay and move into a mentality of “what can I do/what can I give?” But their needs have to be met, somehow, first. So, we continue to offer adult faith formation that is dynamic and relevant. Practically it also needs to be accessible to people who work full-time and who have children. We offer small service opportunities like serving coffee and donuts, where people can connect and feel a part of the larger community. We MUST engage and support the parents of these young ones. There is no easy answer, only insight into what works and what doesn’t. Programming will not solve our “problems” of losing our young families. Conversion, transformative experiences, resurrection in people’s lives is what keeps them committed to their faith. In large group meetings with other Religious Educators, often the harping will begin about “the parents” who don’t do this one time, don’t pay for this or that, gripe, gripe, gripe. I made a commitment to our parents at my first Opening Prayer Service at St. Mark’s. I will not gripe about them. I will not complain about them. I will support every small and large effort they make to catechize their children. I will pray for and with them. I am here for them in whatever way I can be. But, I also expect that of them. I hope and expect that they take seriously, at some point, the real call Jesus has for them in their lives. I’m being clear here about what has proven to work and not work in other parishes because I have a desire to see Resurrection’s Christian Formation continue for years to come. It is call to be attentive to the needs of these people and to serve them. January 8, 20127:05 to 7:35 p.m. Members Present: Kate Arnold, Ed Baum, Valerie Bica, Wayne Bunting, Kim Corridori, Lew Gangloff, Flo Gargula, Fr. Parish Buzz: Everyone shared lots of parish happenings unofficially during the party. Dick Schwer reminded the council that minutes should be sent to members at least five days prior to meeting for review. Father Bill encouraged reports from members be outlined in printed form to allow the minutes to be accurate and more easily written up. Unfinished Business – Update on Strategic Plan by Fr. Bill Graney Strategic planning meeting scheduled for Thursday January 19, at 6:30 p.m. 12 people are in that group. He will meet with Pat Debski before hand to discuss direction/agenda for the meeting. Note: Again, it is important to know that discussions are being held among priests and others in leadership in the diocese about a better vision of how to meet the needs of various aspects of the mission of the diocesan church. Mission often covers these four areas: community, service, teaching and liturgy asking how we can be more effective. We at the parish level ask the same. New Business: Affirm the election of Trustees (state law) Motion made, seconded and approved to affirm the election held in May 2011, of James Nolan and Chip Schussler as trustees of the Parish of the Resurrection for period of June 2011 to June 2012. Pastor’s Comments and Advice: Membership Records Membership records are kept on Parish Data Systems and the initial paper copy. “Why did they leave” can be recorded and will be in the remarks section of the members’ computer census. We are not able to do a computer search of reasons. The parish had devised a numbering system of different types of parishioners (computer recorded households). # 1 – 2000 are active and inactive parishioners, 3000 are people who have contributed but are not registered parishioners, 4000 Christian Formation Program non-parishioners and 9000 are people who have been removed. 3000 are the most productive follow-up group. Father Graney and Father Corrigan. Also attending; Joe Skwish, Dick Schwer, and Mike Pohlen. Pastoral Council Meeting was called to order by Joe McClory at 7:00 P.M. Jim Nolan took roll call. Motion to approve the April 2011 minutes were moved and seconded. Parish Buzz: Father Graney asked if there were any comments from parishioners regarding the “letter”. Father Corrigan noted that one parishioner stated she will increase her giving. Another comment regarding the mortgage being “paid off” was satisfied with an explanation. Father Corrigan stated that the best way to get a young person to attend Mass is to invite them. Some of various ways to attract youth were discussed. Committee Reports: Youth Committee: Sarah Sweigart reported that Diocesan sponsored Pitcher & Basin (local workcamps) were the 2nd week in July both in Wilmington and Maryland. Young Neighbors in Action are going to Newark, NJ July 10th , 12 youths and 3 adults attending. Old Business: Increase Parish Income Committee; Father Graney’s letter was discussed, including announcements after communion, maintaining awareness to increase offertory, more target letters with specific increase, and long range fund raising. Joe McClory reported that 30% of parishioners gives 70 % of the offertory. The question he raised is: Can 30% of the parishioners give more to the offertory. No fee, direct deposit was also discussed. Refreshments: Kim Corridori was ill, but sent the refreshments. Old Business Cont’d, Cost Reduction Committee: Dick Schwer reported that it will take several months to fully analyze several issues in overall cost reduction. Dick reported on the current recommendations of the committee. There was in the original budget $43,000 listed as an expenditure for the HVAC System. This has been removed from the budget with a lesser amount proposed. The $6,300 purchase of new hymnals be set aside until the next fiscal year. It is not recommended by the Committee that CFP be moved from St. Marks to Resurrection’s Worship Center. The space and disruption problems at the Worship Center would greatly outweigh any savings in St. Marks rental. It was recommended that the Youth program be reduced by $2,500 in the proposed budget as that is the amount anticipated by this years expenditures not needed in next years budget. While the “Grass Cutting” contract appears to be very reasonable, the committee recommends the “Property & Grounds Committee” bestrengthened and reorganized with more volunteers, stronger competitive bidding process, whether some of the grass cutting, such as leaf blowing, etc. and be performed by volunteers. Another recommendation is that there will be no 3% increase for Parish Staff for the fiscal year, with a savings of $5,700. Further study to review restructuring of staff to reduce costs. A proposal of the Youth ministry to change the contract of its full time member from 12 months to 10 months is recommended by the committee, with a $7,000 annual savings. Committee to Communicate with and measure the tone of the Parish: Steve Grise reviewed some of the preliminary results of the Parish Priorities Survey. One of the obvious initial conclusions was that 98% of the respondents would recommend Resurrection to a friend and a significant fraction of people heard about Resurrection from a friend. The Increase Giving Team and the Communications Team would prepare the next poster to encourage parishioners to go ask a friend to come visit. The data needs to be further analyzed after the survey closing and inclusion of paper responses. Old Business cont’d: Valarie Bica reported that the Family Picnic scheduled for June was postponed due to lack of help organizing the event. It may be re-scheduled to September. Closing Prayer and Adjournment May 1, 2011Opening Prayer and Reading: Jim Murray Members Present: Ed Baum, Valerie Bica, Kim Corridori, Flo Gargula,, Mary Cullen, Wendy Gill, Angie Grimes, Steve Grise, Cory For Cliff Hegadus, Mary Ann McLane, Joe McClory, Joe Quinn for Leo McDermott, Jim Murray, Jim Nolan, Chip Schussler, Eric Strasser, John Falkowski and Father Bill Graney.
