Morning prayer, Saturday, 11.15.14
A few years ago, I pinched off a branch from my sister Peggy’s Christmas cactus. I took it home to root it. In time it was ready to be potted. It has grown, as my grandmother would say, "slowly but surely…. just as God intends."
Today, it’s in full bloom, teeming in beauty: soft, delicate flowers of pink, held out by humbly bending stems seeming to say, "I present to you a glimpse of the glory of God."
It strikes me how marketers keep pushing back the beginning of the holiday shopping sales. But I don't think this "Christmas" cactus blooming in mid-November is suggesting God has succumbed to the whims of retailers.
Rather, God's gift of Beauty is not a scheduled event. Beauty surrounds. We receive the gift… simply by being Present. Open your eyes, your ears, your being. Ah, Beauty! (gmc)
